Guest Post: Interview with Male Scrapbookers

Brigitte Grant, DT from Scrap Sanctuary ("A blog with a Difference") has posted an article there in French on "Male Scrappers."  She has graciously translated it into English to be posted here on ScrapScene!  We hope you will enjoy this interesting article and interview with a few male scrapbookers. (Also, an article we posted awhile back may be of interest to you: "Scrapbooking for Men.")

We have noticed recently that couple of ‘male scrappers’ have participated in our challenges so… we decided to hunt those guys down and…. to our surprise, there are quite a lot of them!  We have discovered already 5 (from France/Belgium/Europe)! All as talented as each other with their own style.  So we decided to showcase those guys and their awesome work.  They have sent us their pages made especially for Scrap Sanctuary so, don’t hesitate to visit their blogs and to leave them a comment, you will be amazed!

1- How did you discover scrapbooking?
I have learned framing for over 5 years and the framing shop where i was learning was next to a crafty shop (with scrap and patchwork).  So now and then, to improve my framing work, i would go next door to buy scrap papers, brads, eyelets etc….

2- How long have you been scrapping?
I’d say seriously since 8 months and really, framing was on the same level of creativity!

3- What made you start to scrap?
I’d say that with scrapbooking, you have the freedom  to do whatever you feel, you’re not restricted to measurements/dimensions, with regular margins etc….

4- What are your inspirations?
Well… I’m not really into photos…in fact…i don’t like them! I have trouble to work with them except as a gifts or when there’s a photo that I really like.  But I love postcards as you probably noticed, I love illustrations, graphics and some of my favorite illustrators are…
*for fun and bright colors: Misstigri, Anne Soline, Anne-Julie Aubry, Lady Sybille
*and for a Dark feel: Klukeart and Benjamin Lacombe

5- Do you like a particular style?
Originally, i was drawn to Shabby/vintage but i think my style is changing.  But i love inking my papers (to my DH despair who doesn’t like it at all !!)
I’m also a big fan of Chipboard (even if i think titles ruin a page -sorry ! I’m a framing artist!) and also love stamps.
I admire male for female scrappers who are able to do Clean & Simple… i just can’t do this ! (I must be scared of emptiness lol !!!)

6- Which scrappers inspire you?
I’m fan of Alain’s work (The Kawaii boy) even if i couldn’t scrap his style. And a lot more of them who do amazing work with the Clean & Simple.

7- What does scrapbooking brings to your life?
It relaxes me… except when I have to tidy up afterwards lol ! ….I scrap on my lounge table …we live in a tiny flat…. don’t have a ‘real’ scrap room…yet !!
It relaxes me after coming back from work (I work in a crafty shop) after all those clients asking me 50 times a day how to use varnish-glue!! lol !!

1- How did you discover Scrapbooking?
I discovered Scrapbooking through a friend…

2- How long have you been scrapping?
I haven’t scrapbooked for very long… 3 months.

3- What made you start to scrap?
It’s an opening to the creative imagination where we can do any themes: personal and private, Reality and fiction.  It’s an outlet that is good for the soul.

4- What are your inspirations?
To this day, i get mostly inspired by what’s personal, familly, litterature, fiction.

5- Do you like a particular style?
I’d like to describe my style as rather  "gothico-romantico-baroque",  but i’m always open to all styles that allows me to improve whether simple or elaborated.

6- Which scrappers inspire you?
I love my cousin Rowan Mayfair’s style lol but also the Dames at Scrap Sanctuary.

7- What Scrapbooking brings to your life?
Scrapbooking brings me a form of relaxation, serenity, the satisfaction to look at my pages when they look good but also the joy to share  them with my friends and family.

1- How did you discover Scrapbooking?
I’ve discovered scrapbooking 9 years ago while surfing the internet looking for patchworks and from links to links, I stumbled on it and wanted to try.

2- How long have you been scrapping?
I’ve been scrapping for 9 years and made it a profession for 4 years, I had an online shop, went to all expos in France and Belgium.

3- What made you start to scrap?
I used to do lots of wallpaintings, patch, but my walls started too quick to be filled up so.. scrapbooking is to make art in an album, it doesn’t take much room …. well… except when you start to want to have your own scraproom lol !

4- What are your inspirations?
Websites that sell Kawaii writing papers, and wrapping from Art Toys.

5- Do you like a particular style?
I love Freestyle and sometimes a bit of Mixed Media.

6- Which scrappers inspire you?
There are a lot of scrappers who inspire me specially in blogs but unfortunately there are less and less because these days, they do more advertisement for their workshops, however most of scrappers that inspire me are on this site: http://www.scrapinstyletv.com/.

7- What does scrapbooking brings to your life?
Friendships, lots of friendship, Travel and lots of new online friends (…who would think that one day i’d have an online friend who lives in Australia ?? and thanks to what ?  Thanks to scrapbooking of course !! :)

1- How did you discover Scrapbooking?
I’ve discovered scrapbooking less than 2 years ago, thanks to my ex-wife, who was looking for a craft to get busy while on maternity leave.  I got interested to what she was doing by giving my advices on her creations.

2- How long have you been scrapping?
I’ve been scrapping for nearly 2 years.

3- What made you start to scrap?
While looking at my ex-wife creations, i played along and she enticed me to make my first page! I loved the result and since, I haven’t stopped scrapping. I always love photography !! Drawing and painting and scrappbooking allows me to use all my passions.  Doing a Lay out is like doing a painting but with a photo with it.

4-What are your inspirations?
My children, my children and…my children LOL !!

5- Do you like a particular style?
I like all styles, i can do a Clean & Simple LO, then a Freestyle !  and love to mix all materials to finally finish it with a bulky LO !!

6-  Which scrappers inspire you?
No particular scrappers…

7- What does scrapbooking brings to your life?
It allows me to express my feelings that are not easy  to show, and scrapbooking allows me to reveal myself, to show my sensitive side!

1- How did you discover scrapbooking?
Scrapbooking became part of my life thanks to my wife who started to scrap when finding a way to re-educate the manipulation of her fingers, at first Corinne couldn’t do this because of a serious neurologic muscular disease and she needed me to cut papers and help her to put together little things for her leasure time.

2- How long have you been scrapping?
Since September 2006 scrapbooking came into our home and i think …here for a while :)

3- What made you start to scrap?
I always have been into crafty things, before I used to do lots of canvas, cross-stitch and models (in wood or plastic) and what made me start to scrap has been firstly with the help of my wife.

4- What are your inspirations?
I don’t have particular inspirations, I do a bit of everything, and as I often say, I easily adapt myself to the theme required or paper while doing crops or workshops.

5- Do you like a particular style?
If I had a style, i’d say it would be rather vintage but I tend to really like LO that are quite bulky with lots of dimension.
I love the American style, and am not too fancy of the European style.

6- Which scrappers inspire you?
I don’t have favourites, I just like what i see and looking at blogs to discover a multitude of styles.

7- What Scrapbooking brings to your life?
Beside the fact that i spend lots of time with my wife Corinne while scrapping, it allows me also to feel relaxed, the pleasure of creating something unique, personal and  also to share this ‘hobby’ in France and around the world thanks to the Internet.

8- You and Corinne, how do you share your scraproom?
Because we’re lucky to share the same taste, it’s easy, we have a room for ourselves just for scrapping and Internet.
Photos of our scraproom are here

9- And…do you buy scrapping supplies together?
It’s often Coha who discovers cool stuffs on the internet but otherwise, we feel free to buy whenever and whatever depending on the creations we’re working on.  Personnally I have a weakness with wood and clear stamps and… I start to have a lot of them lol !!

Thank you to all of you guys for taking part of this mini-interview, and do visit their respectives blogs, you’ll be amazed by their creativity!!
