“Pretty Little Things” – a Book Review

sallyjeanprettylittlethings.jpgI keep coming back to this book on my shelf of inspiring books. “Pretty Little Things” contains such a wonderful collection of projects and photos by artist, Sally Jean Alexander. Sally shares her love of collecting vintage bits and bobs by turning them into beautiful hand crafted soldered masterpieces featuring her collages.

Sally Jean uses found vintage papers and other ephemera along with a little paint and other mediums to create one of a kind collages. Among the projects illustrated with step by step photos and instructions are collage jewellry, mini books, tiaras, shrines and pendants all made into works of art by this soldering expert. I am ‘in love’ with the tiny soldered glass chair and the doll house to match!

Sally Jean’s photos make it all seem so simple. I have soldered microscope slide pendantscharmflowers.JPG before, but have never thought to make any of those other projects. Now, I’ve got my supplies out again and am raring to go! I found these tiny porcelain doll parts at a thrift shop and guess what is going to become of them? Yes, they will be soldered into little charms! Photo shows that I’ve begun by copper foiling the ends… Also, I found these bits of pottery buried in the sand by the Irish Sea. I think they will too become interesting charms. What fun!
