Tuesday’s tutorial on making stencils can be found here. Today’s tutorial will show you a little about masking as well as a quick tip on making tiny polka dots.
Masking
Masking is pretty much the opposite of stenciling. Instead of inking in the circles we did yesterday, we would instead have kept the punched out circles that were discarded and used them to block off an area for inking. Here is an example using letter stickers.
Materials
Letter Stickers (or any shape you have even if it’s a punched shape from a piece of paper)
Ink pad / paint
Steps
1. Apply the letter sticker to your layout. Dab around it with ink or paint the entire surface if you like!
2. Remove the sticker and voila, that is it.
Polka Dots
Materials
Small paintbrush
Paint
Steps
1. Dip the back end of your paintbrush into the paint. (Not the brush end, the opposite end.)
2. Gently mark your layout with the paintbrush end making tiny polka dots. The end of your paintbrush
should have enough paint on it to make a few dots, which will gradually get smaller. If you prefer them all roughly the same size, then reapply paint between making each dot.

Anna, this is just regular ole’ acrylic paint – like you find at Michaels. It’s the same one I used for the green woodgraining. Hope that helps!
