Spotlight on a Designer: Valerie Salmon

valeriesalmonheadshot.jpgValerie Salmon joins us for this edition of ScrapScene’s Spotlight on a Designer feature. For additional Spotlight interviews, please click here.

Valerie, a former footwear designer, has devoted her creative abilities to scrapbooking for the past 7 years. Art and crafting have always been a large part of her life. It wasn’t a surprise when she became instantly hooked to the hobby after discovering it in 2000. Since then, she has had the privilege of having a great deal of her layouts & projects published in the industry’s most popular magazines and idea books. She has been involved in design teams for various manufacturers, designing artwork for product packaging, tradeshow exhibits, catalogs, class projects, publications, and QVC/HSN television features. Lately, her creative time is primarily spent teaching scrapbooking classes at Memoirs and completing her personal projects.

Valerie is a 2006 Memory Makers Master, a 2005 Paperkuts Power Team member, and was recently named 2007 Paper Crafts Magazine Gallery Idol.

This Northern California native now resides in Indiana with her husband and twovaleriesalmonidolhellobonjour.jpg children. Lauren (7) and Ian (4), are her biggest inspirations as well as her favorite scrapbook & photography subjects. Now a stay-at-home-mom, there’s nothing she enjoys more than spending time with her family.

Here are the questions we posed to Valerie along with her responses:

{ScrapScene} How long have you been scrapbooking? What got you started?

{Valerie Salmon} I discovered scrapbooking 7 years ago several months after my first child, Lauren, was born. I was invited to a Creative Memories workshop, became completely intrigued, and ended up buying everything in sight. A whole new world opened up when I got my hands on some scrapbook magazines and learned of a gazillion other products out there. Scrapbooking was the creative outlet I needed. The obsession started and the rest is history.

{ScrapScene} Do you think you would have developed an interest in this craft if you didn’t have children?

{Valerie Salmon} Perhaps not as early on, but would have eventually. I enjoy most crafts and would undoubtedly (have) formed an instant interest in scrapbooking once I learned of it. Besides, there’s so much to scrapbook besides our beautiful children.

valeriesalmonidolmomcard.jpg{ScrapScene} Are there any other hobbies that you do besides scrapbooking?

{Valerie Salmon} Though there seems to not be much room for other hobbies since scrapbooking, I also love to sew, bake, and draw. I have been sewing since my pre-teen years and have quite the knack for it, making projects from evening gowns to custom drapes. However, the last sewing I’ve done may have likely been on a scrapbook page. ;) Photography is another hobby that I enjoy. I never leave home without at least a camera in my purse.

{ScrapScene} Can you give any suggestions for other artists on developing a unique personal style?

{Valerie Salmon} My advise would be to scrap in a way that pleases you — and only you. Scrapping should be fun. The more different things you try, the closer you will get to assessing your true style.

{ScrapScene} What inspires and motivates you to create if you get a creative block?

{Valerie Salmon} This happens to me quite often. I sometimes wonder where the next idea will come from. I usually leaf through the latest magazines & idea books until I see something that will trigger a light-bulb moment. At times, the best remedy for me is to step back, take a break, then return to the project with fresh eyes. It’s amazing what a little break does.

{ScrapScene} What are your favorite products?

{Valerie Salmon} Patterned paper definitely tops that list. :) RIBBON, chipboard, valeriesalmonjackinthebox.jpg rub-ons, flowers, bling, and lately — clear stamps (can’t get enough of them)!

{ScrapScene} What are your most essential scrapbooking tools?

{Valerie Salmon} Paper trimmer, Cutterbee scissors, Duck-brand disposable adhesive (a must!), pencil, ruler (I’m crazy about measurements), my EK Success circle punches in every size. Does a Mac computer, MS Word, & Adobe Photoshop count as a tools? :)

{ScrapScene} What do you think is the hottest trend in scrapbooking? What do you predict for future trends?

{Valerie Salmon} I don’t know how to answer this question, as I am not a big follower of trends. The ones that appeal to me, I try, and the ones that don’t, I just pass on.

{ScrapScene} Do you have any tips for other scrapbookers on getting their work noticed?

{Valerie Salmon} Whether your work is scanned or photographed, it is always a plus to have a good representation (image) of it. Just keep updated with the current publication “calls” and submitting work accordingly. Be persistent.

{ScrapScene} What project(s) are you working on now? Do you have any sneak peeks to share?

{Valerie Salmon} valeriesalmon0628classpeeks.jpgIt seems like I have been working on handmade cards more than scrapbooking pages lately. It is a refreshing change, actually. I just finished teaching acards class, which we have made available to purchase as a kit by mail at Memoirs, a scrapbook store here in Carmel, Indiana. (peek at left) I am mainly concentrating on planning and designing projects for my regular classes.

I also started a sketch blog, “Got Sketch?” last April which has been a fun new thing for me. I had no idea that sketches appeal to so many. Now, I can’t stop sketching!
Speaking of sketches, I have started a monthly sketch challenge called “Outlines” at MyScrapworks, a scrapbooking site based in the Philippines, my birthplace.

{ScrapScene} Any other new projects in the works that you can tell us about?

{Valerie Salmon} Well, I stepped back quite a bit from scrapbooking commitments to focus more on my family & other interests. Besides the occasional assignments, the one thing I do enjoy & devote much of my creative time doing is teaching scrapbook & paper crafting classes.

Keep an eye out this month for some of my work when I am Mustard Moon‘s Featured Scrapper.
