In case you didn’t have a chance to read through the 21 pages (!) of chatting, here is a brief recap of Kah-Mei Smith‘s chat at Scrapper’s Bliss last night. (As you may or may not know, Kah-Mei is the creative principal and owner of Fontwerks).
- When asked about future plans for Fontwerks, Kah-Mei said, “I had several meetings at CHA to explore expanding our product line. We’re planning a trip to Asia in April as part of that exploration. We’re geared up to expand into another market, having sourced out factories and such – just have to take that leap of faith now!“ Later, Kah-Mei also said, “We are definitely considering moving into general crafts and interior decor/fabrics. I’m attending the National Stationery Show in NY in May as well as the Surtex show at the same time, just to get some feelers out. We planned to go last year, but just got too busy with the company, so this year I’m determined to go, even if it is to find out how that side of the industry works.”
- In regards to choosing her Design Team, Kah-Mei had this to say, “you don’t know how flattered I am when we get inquiries about joining our DT. It’s flattering and sometimes a lot of pressure too, but I try to keep an open mind and I’ve met tons of awesome designers as a result.” Also, “usually before inviting someone to the team, I (and the rest of the team) would have usually followed them, their work and such, for about 6 months.”
- Kah-Mei recommends the rubber stamp positioning tool “Stampamajig” by EK Success. “I wish I had invented the thing,” she says. She uses it for stamping with red rubber stamps and mentions that one of her Design Team members, Laura Kurz, uses it for clear stamps as well.
