Spotlight on a Designer: Christy Tomlinson

Welcome to Christy Tomlinson who is our featured Designer for our Spotlight on a Designer series. Keep a watch out for this series as we will continue to feature interviews with leading edge artists in the scrapbooking industry.

Christy Tomlinson was recently named as a Contributing Editor for BHG’s Scrapbooks Etc. magazine. She is also a Designer for Making Memories. For the last three years, she worked as the Marketing and Education Director for Chatterbox.

We posed a series of questions to Christy. Here they are along with her responses. Check out her great ideas for getting through a creative block!

How long have you been scrapbooking?

[Christy] I have been scrapbooking for 7 years.

What got you started?

[Christy] You know I can’t remember, but I know I wanted to document my children’s lives and I have always loved creative things.. sewing, crafting etc and this was a hobby that combined journaling and the fun of crafting at the same time!

What inspires and motivates you to create if you get a creative block?

[Christy] Others work. I have an inspiration folder, which a friend of mine told me to keep. I clip out layout, ad, anything that I think inspires me, then I write on the page with an arrow, what I like about it and stick it in a binder. The binder is organized by sections, so things are easy to find! The sections are: Ads for Layout Design, Color Combo’s, Techniques, storage organization, home decor.

What are your favorite techniques of the moment?

[Christy] I love stitching, I think it’s because I love sewing. I have always sewn on my layouts but I think now more than ever I love just doing crazy things with it!

What are your favorite products?

[Christy] Rubons, patterned paper, and stamps

What are your most essential scrapbooking tools?

[Christy] That’s a great question! Well I recently found that question out! I had taken all of my scrapbooking basics with me on a family reunion camping trip. The box contained my two trimmers, all my whole punches (different sizes), glue dots, tape runner (not sure if that is the right word) and my ruler. When I got home and realized it had been left clear back 6 hours away in a camp ground we would never visit again… and had an assignment to do, I thought.. well I can do this. I will just make it work! I have scissors and a glue stick.. YEAH RIGHT! LOL.. I am lost with the other stuff. The layout took me way longer than it should have so I went right out that day and rebought everything!

What do you think is the hottest trend in scrapbooking?

[Christy] I see doodling as a really hot trend right now and I think it’s great because it allows people the freedom to just let loose! I also see hand journaling getting there.

What do you predict for future trends?

[Christy] I really think simplicity is coming back. I mean I know it has.. but even more. I see just creative stuff.. like art journal stuff where handwriting takes the place of straight lined computer journaling. Also 4×6 photos.. people just wanting to document life as it is.. not trying to blow it up to have it make point. You know what ads inspire me? The Fiskars ads.. they are simple, tell a story and very much what scrabpooking should be about.

Do you have any tips for getting published?

[Christy] Submit! LOL… honestly… and just keep at it. If that’s something you really want.. it will happen if you keep putting your stuff out there.. and submit everything.. you never know what magazines are looking for.

Are there any other Designers that inspire you?

[Christy] Oh a TON probably too many to list.. but ones that I can always pick out of a crowd and know RIGHT away whose they are (and that give me warm and fuzzies) are… Jenni Bowlin, Melissa Chapman, Jamie Waters, and Mellette Berezowski.

Photo at right is a sneak peek of a layout created by Christy for a class she is teaching in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada in November called “Oodles of Doodles.” Christy describes this layout as “more graphic in nature.” She used the Doodle Genie by Chatterbox for the doodling.

What project are you working on now?

[Christy] I am really busy right now actually and I love it. I am working on a few things.. an article for BHG, layouts for Making Memories and my upcoming classes for the fall season!

Do you have any sneak peeks to share?

[Christy] I can share the classes with you… all the other stuff you will see when it “comes out”

Check out Christy’s blog for some sneak peeks of her class projects.
